about

AT HOME WITH THE TASCAM is a San Francisco Bay Area-based DIY music compilation.

19 artists from all over the Bay Area borrowed the same four-track cassette recorder for one week and were given two simple instructions: "Make something between 1 and 20 minutes long, and remember to mark the chassis when you're done."

The project's mastermind, South Bay electronic artist Phillip Villarreal (BOTTOM・CAfe, ALTAIR 231) has taken on nearly all administrative and executive roles to ensure full success for the project. This has involved the conducting and publishing of promotional interviews for the project blog, the management of a strict, weekly borrowing schedule, and the provision of on-the-fly technical support.

The project is originally inspired by At Home With The Groovebox, a CD compilation originally released on the Beastie Boy's now-defunct Grand Royal label in 1999. For that, several artists were given a Roland MC-505 Groovebox and tasked with creating an entire song with it. AT HOME WITH THE TASCAM pays tribute to this spiritual forebear in the form of its album art: a humorous yet loving recreation of the origin compilation's classic album art.

Phillip Villarreal's careful planning and sincere efforts to honor the spirit of the original Grand Royal release have certainly had a positive effect for the Bay Area's creative community. Musicians who had never recorded independently before were able to produce a finished product within a mere week, and more-experienced musicians were able to push the TASCAM Portastudio to its creative and technical limits, utilizing innovative, Silicon Valley-approved computer technology and digital recording techniques. Collectively, these 26 tracks paint a rough-hewn yet honest portrait of the Bay Area's psycho-geographic landscape. And the chassis itself, now covered in marks ranging from an almost-undetectable conceptual scratch to all-out paintings, has become its own artistic accomplishment.

Thanks to the tech-forward and do-it-yourself philosophies of the Bay Area music scene as well as the collective efforts of the project's 19 participating artists, AT HOME WITH THE TASCAM is sure to leave its creative mark on the psycho-geography of San Jose and the greater Bay Area.
